At the height of the presidency of Donald Trump, when America faced its greatest threat to its democracy, average citizens pushed back. An inspiring documentary shot over the course of two years, THE PUSHBACK weaves together a diverse group of voices across Texas — volunteers, activists, artists, teachers, law enforcement agents, and political candidates — all working to combat policies of cruelty, fight entrenched racism, and to change the course of history in their country.
To celebrate the launch of THE PUSHBACK nationwide, Congresswoman Veronica Escobar, Beto O'Rourke, filmmaker Kevin Ford, and Maria Teresa Kumar of Voto Latino had a lengthy conversation about the film, the most pressing issues in this election, and their efforts to get out the vote in Texas.
Filmmaker Kevin Ford sat down with Austin City Council Member Natasha Harper-Madison and Mayor Steve Adler to have an informative, lively discussion based upon the themes of THE PUSHBACK, especially focusing on what has been happening so far during the 2020 election and how the film captured the run-up to this historic moment in Texas.
Director Kevin Ford contributed as a DP on the new music video by the Black Eyed Peas “THE LOVE” featuring Jennifer Hudson, which also features an appearance by Congresswoman Veronica Escobar.

This film is not just about Texas. It’s about humanity. It’s the inspiration we need right now to keep fighting.

Podcasters, grassroots activists, clergy members, and former Border Patrol officers all play a role in the push and pull of the historically red state, and the progressive movement that’s trying to turn it blue.
Review by Cat Cardenas
In THE PUSHBACK, Kevin Ford’s most recent film, though not entirely a fly-on-the-wall perspective, Kevin stays clear and close to his mission — to amplify voices and stories of people on the front lines who are fighting to make change.
The Pushback is a roving celebration of the Texans—particularly women of color—who are fighting to make our state reckon with its racist past while pushing it toward a more just and equitable future.
Review by Gus Bova
As the female producer on the film, I felt strongly about helping to elevate the women in the film and really protect the heart and emotions of their stories.

Kevin Ford’s inspirational and very important film on the progressive movement in Texas.
Ford focuses on two women of color who emerged victorious during their respective bid for public office in 2018: Austin City District 1 Council Member Natasha Harper-Madison and Congresswoman Veronica Escobar, who represents Texas’ 16th Congressional District in El Paso.
The Pushback chronicles two newly-elected public officials — Congresswoman Veronica Escobar and Councilwoman Natasha Harper-Madison — and shines a light on immigrant rights and institutional racism across the state.
